Veterans Day 2015

Veteran’s day 24th January, 2015.

Another very successful day at Stellenbosch Flying Club with our annual Veterans day. Despite the heat, the Clubhouse and the shade under the trees outside on the lawns, was filled with the awesome legends of Aviation who did not disappoint us with their presence.

Notable by their attendance was Priciilla Henwood (94) (ex Biggin Hill) and Fritz Johl (93) who needs no introduction, and many others who awed us – especially with their modesty! Our honorary veteran, Tony Rodrigues from APCO in Pretoria (who was phoned in error about ten years ago), travels down every year to be with us for the day! I also saw two people re-connect after about 20 years – by shear chance they were both at the same venue!

A book just released by Andrew Embleton about the CFS at Dunnottor was a hit at the table attended by the SAAF Association where Don Bacon had memorabilia for sale.

Lyle Grace and Paul Nicholson made their hanger available for all who wanted to see their veteran aircraft collection – Many thanks, guys. Graham Smith was on hand should anyone want to fly in the Tiger Moth owned by Shane Oberholzer and Alistair Smith. Thank you very much for your generous offer.

Kay Joscelyn and Jean Bulmer were the “Meet and Greet” ladies who were indispensible – thank you very much as well. Jean’s brother supplied the background music free of charge! It certainly helped towards the atmosphere.

All this would not have been possible without the Veteran’s, of course, but the catering staff under the very capable eye of Estelle Slade and her team of Patricia and Romana, as well at the bar staff, Gareth and Melvin, went the extra mile in making the day the success that it was.

(P.S. Unfortunately Jean Bulmer's camera went bang! Luckily she thought quick and snapped away on her cellphone. Better then nothing! Enjoy!)
